Cross Flow Fan – A Brief Introduction from A to Z

The cross-flow fan is similar to most conventional fans, however, they are different in structure and airflow. The blades are usually made of temperature-resistant aluminum alloy, which features lightweight and durable design.

With the long, rectangular shape design and small diameter, the cross-flow fans have been used in many applications and restricted installation spaces as well. Currently, the most widely used are AC, DC or EC cross-flow fans. For the DC cross-flow fan, the voltage can be 12V or 24V, it’s a safe voltage. The EC cross-flow fan is an innovative design with lower energy consumption but with higher performance as the fan speed or airflow is adjustable steplessly. For the AC fan, the main voltage is 220/230 V, and 115/120 V which can be used in almost any country. Another feature of the EC cross-flow fan is the low-noise or ultra-low-noise design, which is a trend for today’s HVAC industry.

The control of the fan motor can be via 0-10V control signal (For EC fan) or pulsed control based on different fans. Or simply on/off control for single-speed fans.

The cost: As the AC cross-flow fan has been used for many years, the technology is not something new. Due to the wide applications and high demands in the markets, the cost is usually low. However, it’s based on the size/ airflow and brands. The fan brands from Europe, especially Germany is usually very high. The USA, Japan, and several other countries design and manufacture high-quality fans as well. An alternative option is a supplier from China, such as China Mainland or Taiwan, they have high-quality fans as well.

And EC fans is expensive than DC fans as well due to their high performance and their function for variable fan speed control. The RPM is adjustable, and so is the airflow and noise.

The application, just name a few:

• Drying units

• Air curtains

• Melting machines

• Transformer air cooling

• Automotive air conditioning

• Other HVAC industry, such as fan coils

• Other Industry
